History: “Little Vietnam”
The program’s official name is Mills 50 District. On Feb. 25, 2020, Daniel Bradfield, an oral historian at the Orange County Regional History Center, wrote an article in The Community Paper about the area (article, checked 2026-11-06). He describes the informal names “Viet Town” and “Little Vietnam” for the area near Colonial Drive and Mills Avenue. In his account:
- Arrivals: After the war ended in 1975, about 1,100 Vietnamese refugees settled in Central Florida.
- Population: At the time he wrote, more than 10,000 Vietnamese residents lived in Orange County.
- First businesses: City directories suggest the first Vietnamese restaurant there opened in 1983, and the first grocery and pharmacy in 1985.
- By 1987: Vietnamese doctors, dentists, and tailors had storefronts in the area.
These are the author’s figures from 2020. This guide doesn’t report whether the businesses named in the article are operating now.
Getting around
- Crosswalk project: The city is designing a new crosswalk on Mills Avenue at Canton Street as part of its Vision Zero program (Mills 50 Crosswalk Improvements, checked 2026-11-06).
- What’s planned: a zebra-striped crosswalk, a pedestrian refuge island in the middle of the street, flashing beacons, and curb extensions.
- Turn changes: left turns across Mills at that spot will be limited.
- Approvals: Mills Avenue is a state road owned by FDOT, so the project depends on permit approvals.
- Parking: For parking at a particular business, check that business’s own site. For example, Black Rooster lists front and rear parking.
- Murals: The district’s website has an undated list of murals (murals). Murals can change.
Practical tips
- Check a business’s own site for hours on the day you go. The hours above are as posted on Nov. 6, 2026.
