Do You Need a Rental Car in Orlando?

When a rental car makes sense in Orlando and when airport transit, shuttles, rideshare, and Disney resort transport are enough.

Fares, parking fees, toll rates, and transit schedules change. Figures below are as posted on the cited pages on Nov. 6, 2026, unless noted.

Direct answer

If you stay at a Walt Disney World resort hotel and mostly use Disney’s buses, monorail, or boats between hotels and parks, you can often skip a rental car. A car is more useful for trips outside that network, especially Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, which says no public transportation serves it, and Space Coast beach days. From Orlando International Airport (MCO) you can get into town without a car by hotel shuttle, local bus, rideshare, shuttle van, or taxi. Brightline (to South Florida) leaves from the MCO Train Station at Terminal C, and SunRail connects by LYNX bus on weekdays only.

Geographic scope

This guide covers MCO, Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, and day trips east toward Brevard County (Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach). According to MCO, SunRail’s corridor runs through Volusia, Seminole, Orange, and Osceola counties. It does not cover Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) or Tampa.

Trips where you can skip the car

Walt Disney World offers complimentary bus service “throughout Walt Disney World Resort.” Bus service from resort hotels to the theme parks “begins 45 minutes prior to opening and ends one hour after closing.” Some park-to-park trips combine bus, monorail, boat, or walking. Disney resort buses don’t allow luggage or alcohol (Disney Bus Service, checked Nov. 6, 2026).

Disney’s parking page also says resort guests “may take advantage of complimentary transportation by Disney bus, monorail or boat.” It lists complimentary self-parking at resort hotels for registered guests, and complimentary standard parking at Disney Springs and the Disney water parks (Disney Parking, checked Nov. 6, 2026).

For a Universal Orlando stay, check universalorlando.com for current hotel transportation and parking before deciding against a car.

Trips where a car helps

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex says: “Currently, no public transportation is available for the visitor complex.” It also says the complex “does not provide transportation to and from Orlando.” The complex names Gray Line Orlando, a third-party operator, as offering bus tours (KSC travel information, KSC FAQs, checked Nov. 6, 2026).

MCO lists Brightline stations in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Aventura on the Orlando–Miami line. None are in Brevard County (MCO Train Service, checked Nov. 6, 2026). For beach days, the visitor complex, or lodging outside the Disney resort network, compare a rental car against tour or rideshare costs for your own itinerary.

Getting from MCO without a car

MCO’s ground-transportation page lists hotel shuttles, local bus, peer-to-peer rentals, ride sharing, shuttle vans, and SunRail. It also posts an “Approximate Rates” table by destination area. Some examples from that table, as posted Nov. 6, 2026:

These are the airport’s approximate figures, not quotes (MCO Ground Transportation, checked Nov. 6, 2026).

Brightline: The MCO Train Station is next to Terminal C. It houses the Terminal Link to Terminals A and B and the Brightline station. “Brightline currently operates between Orlando International Airport and Miami with stations in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Ft. Lauderdale and Aventura” (MCO Train Service, checked Nov. 6, 2026).

SunRail plus a LYNX bus: SunRail “operates over a 61 mile system with 17 stations,” with a bus link to MCO from Sand Lake Road station (MCO Train Service). At the airport, the LYNX stop is in Terminal A, Level 1, Commercial Lane spaces A38–A41 (MCO SunRail, checked Nov. 6, 2026).

SunRail’s Train to Plane page names LYNX routes 311, 11, and 42 between Sand Lake Road station and the airport. Fares start at $2, which includes a free LYNX transfer within the same county, plus $1 for each additional county. A bus arrives about every 15 minutes, and the page describes the service as Monday through Friday (SunRail Train to Plane, checked Nov. 6, 2026).

Limits to plan around:

Disney airport transfers: Check Disney’s website for current options. Don’t assume a hotel stay includes an airport transfer.

Tolls and parking

SR 528 (Beachline Expressway) connects travelers to MCO, “the east coast beaches and Cape Canaveral,” and Kennedy Space Center. CFX operates 23 miles of it, from Boggy Creek Road to SR 520. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise operates the westernmost 8 miles (I-4 to Boggy Creek) and the easternmost 15 miles (SR 520 to US 1) (CFX SR 528, checked Nov. 6, 2026).

CFX tolling is cashless, and E-PASS customers “save up to 50%” compared with Pay By Plate. The rates on CFX’s page took effect July 1, 2026, and adjust every year. Use CFX’s toll calculator for your route (CFX Toll Rates, checked Nov. 6, 2026). If you rent a car, check the rental agreement for how the company bills tolls.

Disney theme-park parking (as posted Nov. 6, 2026):

(Disney Parking, checked Nov. 6, 2026)

KSC Visitor Complex parking (as posted Nov. 6, 2026): $15 for cars, $5 for motorcycles, and $20 for RVs and oversized vehicles (KSC travel information).

Practical tips

  1. Base the car decision on where you’re staying: days spent at Disney resorts versus Space Coast or multi-area days.
  2. Before booking a rental “just in case,” compare Brightline (Terminal C), SunRail plus LYNX (weekdays only), hotel shuttles, and rideshare on MCO’s pages.
  3. For Beachline (SR 528) trips, check the CFX toll calculator and your rental company’s toll terms.
  4. Check the Disney and KSC parking pages again close to your trip. Disney’s preferred rates are seasonal, and CFX rates change every year.
