Direct answer

Whether Orlando is a good place to live depends on your budget, your job sector, how you handle heat and hurricane season, and where in the metro area you settle. That could be the City of Orlando, another Orange County city, or one of the other three counties in the metro. This article sets out dated Census, BLS, state, and county figures for each of those areas. It doesn’t rank Orlando against other cities.

What the table shows:

Property taxes and homestead

Florida’s Department of Revenue (DOR) says a homestead exemption on a permanent residence can cut the home’s taxable value “by as much as $50,000.” It also qualifies the home for the Save Our Homes assessment limit, and part of that benefit can be transferred (“ported”) to a new Florida homestead. You apply through the county property appraiser (DOR exemptions, checked 2026-11-06).

DOR Bulletin PTO 26-21 (Nov. 5, 2026) says Amendment 3 “was approved by Florida voters in the November 3, 2026, general election.” According to the bulletin:

(PTO 26-21, checked 2026-11-06)

To find out how this applies to a particular property, ask the property appraiser in the county where it’s located: Orange, Osceola, Seminole, or Lake.

Insurance and flood maps

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation’s consumer page covers homeowners and flood insurance. It lists the Department of Financial Services Consumer Helpline, 1-877-693-5236 (FLOIR consumers, checked 2026-11-06).

FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center is the official public source of flood hazard information for the National Flood Insurance Program (FEMA MSC, checked 2026-11-06). Look up an address there before you sign a lease or a purchase contract.

Weather and hurricanes

At Orlando International Airport, average daily highs (1991–2020 normals) range from 71.8°F in January to 92.0°F in July. These are readings from a single weather station, not averages for the whole metro (FSU Florida Climate Center, Orlando normals, checked 2026-11-06).

Orange County Emergency Management says: “The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1 and ends November 30.” It lists safety guides, shelters, and alert sign-ups. Contact it at 3-1-1 or 407-836-3111 (Orange County Emergency Information, checked 2026-11-06). Seminole, Osceola, and Lake counties run their own emergency offices, so use the page for your county.

Schools

The Florida Department of Education publishes 2026 school grades and district grades as Excel files. Its September 8, 2026, update includes an overview of changes to the grading scale (FLDOE school grades, checked 2026-11-06).

Each county is its own school district: Orange, Seminole, Osceola, and Lake. Download the files for the schools you’re considering, and be careful comparing years across the grading-scale change.

Neighborhoods

For Main Street districts, Lake Eola, Baldwin Park, and Winter Park’s Park Avenue, see Walking Around Orlando’s Districts. The city’s program page is Orlando Main Streets (checked 2026-11-06).

Practical tips

  1. Decide on the area first: the City of Orlando, another Orange County city, or Seminole, Osceola, or Lake County.
  2. Treat Census medians as background, and check current listings separately.
  3. Ask your county property appraiser about homestead and Amendment 3 timing for your own situation.
  4. Check FEMA flood maps and FLDOE grade files before you sign.
  5. Sign up for your county’s emergency alerts before hurricane season.
